Life Science Researchers Have A Clear Favorite For Chromatography Products

A New Report From Biocompare, Inc. Finds GE Healthcare the Preferred Chromatography Vendor

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- A new report from Biocompare Inc., Protein Expression Analysis: Tools of the Trade, shows that GE Healthcare (formerly Amersham Biosciences) is the clear favorite among life scientists who are purchasing chromatography products. Based on a survey of nearly 500 researchers, 46% indicated that they primarily purchase chromatography products from GE Healthcare. Nineteen percent of the survey participants indicated that they purchased their chromatography products from Bio-Rad, making it the next most popular choice.

The survey also explores which protein expression analysis techniques life scientists are using in the lab. Sixty-nine percent of survey participants currently perform western blot analysis, making it one of the most widely used techniques. Forty-three percent of respondents indicate that they are either using or plan to use protein microarrays. This percentage is expected to increase as more tools for protein microarrays reach the marketplace.

"We were not surprised to see western blot analysis as one of the most commonly used protein analysis techniques," says Michael Okimoto, Ph.D., Vice President of Content Development for Biocompare. "What we were surprised with is the number of people who have already begun using protein microarrays. It is a relatively new technology and it seems that researchers are excited about using it."

In addition to western blot analysis and protein microarrays, the survey also explores other commonly used protein expression analysis techniques such as liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, 2D gel electrophoresis, and FACS.

The report, Protein Expression Analysis: Tools of the Trade, available from Biocompare, Inc., explores researchers future purchasing plans and the technologies they are currently using, including: protein microarrays; 2D gel electrophoresis; mass spectrometry; liquid chromatography; and FACS analysis.
