Endonucleases

Endonuclease is an enzyme that cleaves the phosphodiester bond within a polynucleotide chain. It cleaves bonds within a recognition sequence, as opposed to exonucleases that cleave bonds at the end of the sequence. Endonucleases include restriction endonucleases, which cleave at specific sites, as well as nonspecific nucleases. Some common endonucleases are Cas9, Deoxyribonuclease I, Benzonase, Endonuclease I (FEN1), Endonuclease VIII (Nei), and Endonuclease III (Nth). Endonucleases, especially restriction endonucleases, play a vital role in recombinant DNA technology and genetic engineering.
