Amersham Typhoon 5 Biomolecular Imager

Amersham Typhoon 5 laser scanner precisely quantitates proteins, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules labeled with multiple visible and infrared fluorescent dyes, radioisotopes, and stained with dyes.

  • Versatility: image multifluorescent-, radioisotope-labeled, and colorimetric samples on gels, membranes, microplates, culture dishes, and tissue sections
  • Infrared and visible fluorescence imaging: use visible and near-infrared (NIR) excitation to image a wide range of fluorescent dyes
  • Accurate quantitation: detect signals from as low as 3 pg of protein and differences across a dynamic range with greater than 5 orders of magnitude
  • High resolution: resolve fine details in your sample with a pixel resolution as low as 10 µm
  • High sample throughput: maximize efficiency using 40 × 46 cm scanning area to simultaneously image up to 20 gels or blots (10 × 8 cm) or 9 multiwell plates
  • Ease of use: auto- and semi auto-scan functions, automatic filter recognition, and modular access make system well suited to multiuser environments

Visible and infrared fluorescent gel imaging system

Amersham Typhoon 5 is GE’s most versatile laser scanner for precise quantitation of biomolecules in gels, blots, and other sample types. It has the same capabilities as the Typhoon RGB model, with the addition of near-infrared (NIR) functionality. Typhoon 5 supports the following imaging modes:

  • Near-infrared fluorescent imaging for NIR fluorescent Western blotting and other applications
  • Visible fluorescence imaging in red, green, blue (RGB) channels to support multiplex fluorescence imaging (e.g., 2D-DIGE)
  • Imaging of multiplex RGB fluorescent Western blots, using ECL Plex and/or other fluorophore-labeled antibodies.
  • Phosphorimaging, in which samples containing 3H, 14C, 32P, 33P, 35S (or other radioisotopes) are exposed to a storage phosphor screen (imaging plate)
  • Optical densitometry for quantitation of colorimetrically-stained samples (e.g., Coomassie™ blue; silver stain)
  • Chemiluminescence imaging that does not require maximum sensitivity (dark scan function)

Near-infrared fluorescent imaging

This visible and infrared fluorescent gel imaging system is equipped with 2 NIR lasers that enable NIR fluorescent Western blotting. The two NIR lasers, optimized optics, and a new detector enable multiplex Western blotting with high sensitivity and wide dynamic range.

Multiplex fluorescence imaging applications

This Typhoon imager is optimized for multifluorescent imaging and precise quantitative Western blotting. Typhoon 5 supports multiplex fluorescence imaging with RGB and NIR channels, ECL Plex imaging, and 2-D DIGE imaging.

Legacy support and imaging accessories

This next generation Typhoon imager supports legacy units of radioisotope measurements from GE Healthcare and Fujifilm™ (photostimulated luminescence units and the .img file format). GE Healthcare offers a wide range of Life Sciences solutions for imaging, including storage phosphor screens, an image eraser, and an accessory cabinet.
