Glycerol

Glycerol, with the molecular formula C3H8O3, is a triol that is odorless, colorless, non-toxic, and viscous. In the lab, glycerol is a common component of various buffers and solutions. Due to its anti-freeze properties, it is used as a cryoprotectant for the cold storage of proteins, enzymes, cells, small organisms, and other biological samples. It is added in electrophoresis loading buffers to allow proteins or DNA to sink into gel wells. Glycerol gradients can also be used to purify proteins, bacteriophages, or organelles.
