PVDF Membranes

PVDF (polyvinylidene difluoride) membranes are widely used for immunoblotting techniques such as Western blots. During Western blots, samples are transferred from a protein gel onto the PVDF membrane by electroblotting, and then used for immunodetection or protein sequencing. PVDF is favored as a material due to its high thermal stability, good chemical resistance, high hydrophobicity, and good mechanical strength. PVDF has a protein binding capacity of 170 to 200 µg/cm2, which is higher than that of nitrocellulose and therefore provides greater sensitivity for proteins with low abundance. PVDF membranes are durable and have high chemical resistance compared to other membranes, which makes them ideal for reprobing and sequencing. They are most suitable for the detection of high molecular weight proteins and can also be used for solid-phase assay systems. Varying pore sizes are available and should be chosen based on the application.
