Various services are available for the production of recombinant antibodies. Recombinant antibodies differ from traditional polyclonal or hybridoma-based monoclonal antibodies in that they are cloned from a recombinant gene and then produced in vitro via a cellular expression system. Options for expression systems include E. coli, yeast, insect, or mammalian cell culture. The produced antibody is a fragment, only containing the variable region of the original immunoglobulin. These antibodies can be engineered to be highly specific, and offer benefits associated with a smaller protein size, such as better biodistribution. The main forms of recombinant antibodies are Fab fragments, single chain variable fragment (scFv), and bispecific recombinant antibodies.
