Fluorophores and Dyes

Fluorophores and dyes are used to stain and detect the presence of certain molecules and compounds. Fluorophores can emit a specific wavelength of light upon excitation and are often bonded to macromolecules. Fluorophores that act as dyes include Fluorescein, Texas Red, and X-Rhodamine, while DAPI, Ethidium Bromide, Propidium Iodide, Hoechst 33342, Acridine Orange, and 7-AAD act as nucleic acid dyes. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), a derivative of fluorescein, is widely used in cell biology, especially for flow cytometry. 7-Aminoactinomycin D (7-AAD) is an intercalating dye used as a fluorescent marker for DNA. Phalloidin, a peptide originating from Amanita phalloides, is used to selectively label F-actin. Fluorophores and dyes are used for protein locality studies, cellular organelle imaging, enzyme assays, fluorescent imagining and microscopy, spectroscopy, immunocytochemistry, and immunohistochemistry.
