Verifying a cell line is free of contamination from other cell lines and microbes ensures the quality of results. Ideally, the cell line will have been authenticated using standardized practices from the cell bank it is obtained from, but this option is not always available. In such cases, it is possible the cell line underwent little or no authentication testing or was tested using outdated methods. When this happens, it is good practice for the researcher to be able to conduct fundamental tests to ensure the lines are uncontaminated and correctly identified.
