Biological safety cabinet manufacturers have lowered downflow velocity while maintaining inflow velocity in recent years to increase energy efficiency, reduce exhaust system requirements and lower BSC noise and vibration levels. However, there has been some concern that lowering downflow velocity could create greater potential for cross contamination. This white paper argues that, if proper procedure is followed, lowering of downflow velocity does not have to mean greater cross-contamination.
