Triton X-100 is a viscous, colorless nonionic detergent commonly used in breaking down cellular membranes to extract proteins and nucleic acids or to permeabilize the cell. It can also be used to solubilize membrane proteins. At room temperature, the compound is a liquid that is soluble in water and alcohol. Triton X-100 shares similarities to IGEPAL CA-630, but is slightly more hydrophilic.
