ZIP9 is an alias of the human SLC39A9 gene, which encodes the protein, solute carrier family 39 member 9. The SLC39A9 protein is 307 amino acid residues in length and 32.3 kilodaltons in mass. However, as many as 3 protein isoforms have been identified. It is localized to the cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, golgi, and cytoplasm of the cell. In terms of tissue specificity, it is reported to be highly expressed in pancreas, testis, and pituitary and moderately in the kidney, liver, uterus, heart, prostate, and brain, whereas expression is lower in the ovary and colon.
