Functionally, this protein is a known catalytic subunit of the V1 complex of vacuolar(H+)-ATPase (V-ATPase), a multisubunit enzyme composed of a peripheral complex (V1) that hydrolyzes ATP and a membrane integral complex (V0) that translocates protons. The canonical protein structure is reported to have an amino acid length of 617 residues, a mass of 68.3 kDa, and is a member of the ATPase alpha/beta chains protein family. It is known to be localized in the membrane, cytoplasmic vesicles, lysosomes and cytoplasm and is reported be highly expressed in the skin. As many as 2 protein isoforms have been reported. The protein has been noted to be post-translationally phosphorylated. The ATP6V1A gene has been associated with the disease, Cutis laxa.
