pTau ELISA kits are assays designed to detect the phosphorylated form of protein tau. Tau proteins are produced by alternate splicing of the microtubule associated protein tau (MAPT) gene. They are found in neurons of the central nervous system and play a role in maintaining the stability of the microtubules in neuronal axons. Hyperphosphorylation of tau proteins causes them to detach from microtubules and interfere with axonal signal transmission. pTau is used as a biomarker for neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
