Anti-GD3S antibodies are used in antigen-specific immunodetection in biological samples. The target GD3S is a known alias name of the protein ST8 alpha-N-acetyl-neuraminide alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 1, encoded by the ST8SIA1 gene in humans. This 356-amino acid residue protein is known to catalyze the addition of sialic acid in alpha 2,8-linkage to the sialic acid moiety of the ganglioside GM3 to form ganglioside GD3; gangliosides are a subfamily of complex glycosphinglolipds that contain one or more residues of sialic acid. It is localized to the Golgi of the cell and features glycosylated post-translational modifications. In terms of tissue expression, it is reported to be highly expressed in melanoma cell lines, adult and fetal brain and to a lesser extent in adult and fetal lung.
