In humans, this target is encoded by the gene, granulin precursor (GRN). Orthologs for GRN have also been reported in other species, including mouse, rat, bovine, frog, zebrafish, chimpanzee and chicken.
The canonical GRN protein is 593 amino acids in length, 63.5 kDa in mass, and has a secreted and lysosomal subcellular localization. It is a member of the Granulin protein family. GRN functions in cytokine activity and chaperone binding, as well as having a role in the innate immune system. Tissue-specific expression of GRN has been observed in several tissues, including kidney, bone and bone marrow. Post-translational modifications have been described, notably proteolytic cleavage and glycosylation.
Synonyms for this protein include: CLN11; GEP; GP88; PCDGF; PEPI; PGRN; progranulin; PC cell-derived growth factor; acrogranin.
