Anti-cone-rod homeobox antibodies are used in the immunodetection of the protein encoded by the CRX gene. In humans, the canonical protein has a reported length of 299 amino acid residues and a mass of 32.3 kDa. Its subcellular localization is in the nucleus. A member of the Paired homeobox protein family, it is reported to be a transcription factor that binds and transactivates the sequence 5'-TAATC[CA]-3' which is found upstream of several photoreceptor-specific genes, including the opsin genes. Other names for this target antigen include CRD, LCA7, OTX3, cone-rod homeobox protein, orthodenticle homeobox 3, and CORD2.
