Oligodendrocytes are glial cells in the brain and spinal cord most known for their function in supporting neuronal cells with a layer of myelin sheath. This insulating layer is comprised of cholesterol, sphingomyelin, glycolipids, and proteins such as myelin basic protein (MBP) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG). Loss of myelin, or demyelination, causes diseases such as multiple sclerosis and various leukodystrophies. Antibodies to oligodendrocyte marker proteins, such as NG2, Olig1, Olig2, Olig3, and OSP are available from several suppliers.
