CD33 is a versatile marker. Not many appreciate how useful it can be in identifying different blood cell subsets. In this review, my lab used CD33 to identify monocyte, granulocytes and even basophils.

Results Summary

The staining is straightforward. The results are impressive. Shown in the image attached, a simple 2D dotplot with CD33 on the x-axis and side scatter on the y-axis. Staining with CD33 allowed the identification of monocytes (bright positive - in green), granulocytes (dim positive - in blue), lymphocytes (negative - in red), and even basophils (intermediate positive/low side scatter - in purple).
