Pipetman® P Pipettes From Gilson (P20, P100, P200, P1000)
Accuracy is the quintessential element of successful experimental procedure. Accuracy is important in each phase of any research project, from the theoretical set up to the performance of the experiments as well as the interpretation of results. The vast majority of experimental protocols in the life sciences involve the handling of liquids; therefore, the accuracy in measuring the volumes is essential for a successful outcome. A series of products that ensure accuracy as well as ease of liquid handling is the Gilson Pipetman® P range of adjustable pipettes.

The Gilson Pipetman® P range of models, which cover a range of volumes from 0.2 ul to 10 ml, are classic pieces of equipment used by many laboratories for about 30 years with enormous success and high reliability. These pipettes are adjustable to the full range of their volume capacity by manual air-displacement. In our laboratory, we mainly study various immunological mechanisms; we routinely isolate proteins, test the purity of our solutions and set up cell culture experiments. We work mostly with extremely quantities of protein, as their concentration in body fluids is quite low. As a result, we must be very precise in order not to waste even a drop.

Furthermore, cell culture experiments must be performed many times, in order to obtain significant results, and the conditions (concentrations of various molecules) must be replicated with no deviations. We use mainly the P20, P100, P200, and P1000 models, in order to cover our need for accurately dispensing various volumes of reagents and protein solutions.

The main body of each pipette is constructed of PVDF and the metal parts are stainless steel, which enhances their durability over time. Furthermore, the tip ejector (stainless steel) and the tip holder can be removed from the device and washed or even sterilized in an autoclave. It is very easy to maintain each pipette in a very decent condition by following a few simple guidelines for appropriate pipetting and cleaning procedures. One of our pipettes appeared to have some kind of malfunction after suffering from serious mishandling. However, it was very easy to dismantle it and calibrate it again manually (with the help of a technician). This pipette is still working with 100% accuracy, as if it was brand new.

The volume of each pipette is adjusted by turning the piston either clockwise or counterclockwise. I have sometimes encountered problems with the piston, as it is too stiff and this makes it difficult to turn while wearing gloves. Another negligible disadvantage is that it is almost impossible to switch between various volumes using only one hand, due to the stiffness of the piston.

I have used all of the above models for biochemical experiments and for setting up cell culture assays repeatedly with excellent results. Overall, these pipettes, if treated with respect, provide very accurate liquid handling, which is crucial for all fine experimental procedures. Their main drawback, which is the stiffness of the piston, is balanced by their high reliability.

Pipetman® P Pipettes From Gilson (P20, P100, P200, P1000)
The Good

Great accuracy, easy to clean/sterilize and to maintain in a decent condition for many years.

The Bad

The piston is too stiff and as a result, it is sometimes difficult to turn without tearing your gloves.

The Bottom Line

Combine low cost (due to their longevity) with great efficiency; a must for everyone who works with biochemical, molecular or cellular biology techniques.
