Description
Product Characteristics:
This proteoglycan is a major component of extracellular matrix of cartilagenous tissues. A major function of this protein is to resist compression in cartilage. It binds avidly to hyaluronic acid via an N-terminal globular region.
Subcellular location: Secreted
Synonyms: AGC1, SEDK, AGCAN, CSPG1, MSK16, CSPGCP, Aggrecan core protein, Cartilage-specific proteoglycan core protein, CSPCP, Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan core protein 1, Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan 1, ACAN
Target Information: This gene encodes a calcium-binding mitochondrial carrier protein. The encoded protein localizes to the mitochondria and is involved in the exchange of aspartate for glutamate across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Polymorphisms in this gene may be associated with autism, and mutations in this gene may also be a cause of global cerebral hypomyelination. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2012]
