Robert Hooke first described cells in 1665 in his book Micrographia. He looked at a variety of objects with his home-made compound microscope, including a flea, but he coined the term "cell" while looking at a slice of cork - the partitions in the cork reminded him of monks' cells. Fortunately, modern biologists no longer need to construct their own microscopes, but they still have challenges to grapple with, including mycoplasma infection.
