The beta- and gamma-secretase are essential for the generation of beta-Amyloid. Beta-Amyloid is the major constituent of amyloid plaques, and plays a key role in Alzheimer's Disease. The caspases are a family of cysteine proteases that are key mediators of programmed cell death or apoptosis. Apoptosis can play a significant role in disease when it is either excessive or insufficient, and has been implicated in Alzheimer's Disease.
