 Go With The Flow
Apr 17 '08
Flow cytometry systems are fancy tools of the XXI century. The list of flow cytometry applications is very long and constantly expanding. These instruments allow you to count and sort different kinds of tiny particles (like cells, bacteria, worms, embryos and others) suspended in a stream of droplets. Modern flow cytometers permit physical and chemical characterization of thousands of particles in every second, in "real time". When choosing a flow cytometer, remember to decide upon which light source you want to use (and are willing to pay for): mercury or xenon lamps, water-cooled lasers, air-cooled lasers, or diode lasers, as well as how many lasers and fluorescence detectors you need (in general, more is better, but greater sensitivity comes at a price). Another question is whether you want also to obtain digital images of individual cells, which could help you to determine the cellular location of the fluorescent signal. Finally, check whether your new flow cytometer has a friendly (inter)face. These sophisticated machines are more and more popular, so if you decide to “go with the flow” and purchase your own, make sure that you’ll enjoy its full potential.
