 Gel Imaging Systems
Apr 1 '08
Gel imaging systems can be used with Western blots, including multicolor Westerns; arrays; fluorescent DNA and protein gels; and for colony counting. Buying an imaging system can be incredibly complicated and the choices are vast. As with any large piece of equipment, there are a wide variety of prices to match the wide variety of features. My main advice would be to start small. Assess your basic needs and make sure those are met before being talked into a larger, more complicated system that may only interfere and unnecessarily hamper basic functions. The most basic option for a gel system is the ability to detect chemiluminescence. Camera specifications and features are the next piece of the system to research. There are cooled CCD cameras with various megapixels and bits, zoom capabilities and lenses. This can be important when low-light conditions and weak signals are being imaged, especially for use in publications. However, if UV imaging is all that is needed, then a basic camera is more than adequate. Most of the other hardware is pretty standard – imaging cabinet, UV transilluminator, fold down white table, filter wheel and epi illumination. Software, however, can vary widely. If possible, try out the system and its features. The ability to control the machine with the computer, to network, to write on and edit images, and to print are some of the most useful features available. Oftentimes, a small printer is part of the package, which is usually necessary and convenient for documentation. A great imaging system can be incredibly useful in the lab and you will be amazed how many of the added features will come to grow on you. It can be tricky, however, to find that fine balance between too much and not enough; so sit down, review the options, try out a system, and then image away.
