Shaken, Not Stirred: Cell Culture Equipment for the Lab
Nov 25 '07
Equipment for cell culture growth, detection and storage is an essential element of a wet laboratory. The modern laboratory incubator shakers (see some examples below) provide an essential addition to the lab and can make your work less cumbersome. In making a purchasing decision regarding incubator shakers, it is very important to determine how well your culture media will be mixed with the gases in the incubator. So some of the important questions you should ask are: Which mode of shaking fits me the best: reciprocal, orbital, rocking or vortexing? Or maybe you need a programmable agitation controller to easily switch from one mode to another? How precisely is the temperature controlled and is it uniform throughout the incubator? What are your needs: a large, stand-alone shaker or rather a smaller, benchtop one? Are you going to use flasks of one standard size, or would you prefer a shaker which can accommodate different flask sizes? Do you crave for a multifunctional unit, which can also perform hybridization or refrigeration? Last but not least - maintenance: Media spills WILL happen, so preventing contamination is very important (e.g. does a shaker come equipped with UV germicidal lamp?). Answering these questions should help you to make sure that your culture cocktails are well shaken, not just stirred.
