Finding The Best Thermal Cycler For Your Needs

Jul 16 '07
Thermal cyclers are the programmable heating blocks that control and maintain the temperature of the sample through the three temperature-dependent stages that constitute a single cycle of PCR: template denaturation; primer annealing; and primer extension. There are many factors to consider when purchasing a thermal cycler and the list that follows includes a number which are of particular importance. Perhaps the primary consideration is the number of PCR reactions that will be run on a regular basis. Thermal cyclers are available that hold from a mere 16 tubes to blocks which hold 384 tubes. Thermal cyclers which hold multiple blocks of 384 allow for truly high throughput PCR or allow several different PCR reactions to be carried out simultaneously. Blocks of different sizes are often interchangeable and this enables even greater flexibility. Another feature present in some thermal cyclers is a gradient function which allows different annealing temperatures in different parts of the block. This can be an invaluable feature when optimization of a PCR reaction is necessary. Check out the thermal cyclers below to get started on your search for the assay that best suits your needs.
