 Identify Many Targets In A Small Sample

If you were trying to identify (and quantify) multiple targets in a single sample one at a time, you could end up needing a lot of sample. But that is where multiplexing comes in. With multiplexing technologies, the sample is first incubated with a bead containing an antibody (for peptide or protein detection) or stretch of nucleic acid (for nucleic acid detection) specific to the target. After the appropriate incubation and washing steps, the bead passes in front of 2 lasers: One for bead identification and the other for target quantification. Because the beads are small and the detection is precise, multiple targets (up to 100) can be detected within small volumes of sample (less than 50 ul). While all of the instruments below operate on the same principle, you will find differences in the number and types of samples that can be processed. If you want the flexibility of using your system for multiplex cellular assays, for example, you’ll want to check out BD Biosciences’ system. But if maximizing throughput is your goal, you’ll be more interested in the 100 target capabilities of the other systems, some of which are also automation compatible.
