If a picture is worth a thousand words, then an image generated by a confocal laser scanning imaging system could fill an encyclopedia. Many of the imaging systems available today can be used to visualize everything from a fixed tissue section to the motion of living cells. When capturing any image, the basics are still the most important: image quality and resolution. But image quality and resolution won’t matter if the system you choose can’t see what you are looking for. Many confocal laser scanning imaging systems, including those listed below, offer fluorescent imaging at multiple wavelengths. Make sure that the system you choose is compatible with the fluorescent dyes you are currently using, as well as dyes you may want to use in the future. Ideally, your imaging system should have the flexibility to upgrade to accommodate new dyes. For maximum flexibility, you may wish to purchase a system which has multiple laser or camera choices, or the ability to interface with robotic instrumentation for automation.
