Rapid and accurate identification and quantification of proteins and their post-translational modifications - in complex expression profiles or in the context of defined protein complexes - is one of the goals of proteomics research. One key requirement for this approach is the ability to resolve the individual components of complex protein and peptide mixtures prior to MS analysis. Now the Agilent micro-fraction collection system offers researches new possibilities as a separation tool for proteomics. With limited samples amounts the challenge is to provide a separation tool, which can be used for subsequent high sensitivity mass spectrometric detection. This requires a system that is specifically designed for one or multidimensional chromatographic separation of small sample amounts at low flow rates and allows the subsequent collection of very small fraction volumes.
