BrdU Assay

5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine, also known as, BrdU, is used to detect proliferating cells in living tissues. BrdU integrates itself into DNA that has just been synthesized after a round of DNA replication during cell proliferation. The BrdU can do this by incorporating pyrimidine into the newly synthesized DNA in place of the thymidine. It can then be detected with an antibody specific for BrdU, allowing a researcher to observe the results of proliferation during an in vivo experiment.
