MCDB Medium is a type of basal growth medium for mammalian tissue culture. Developed by Richard Ham and colleagues beginning in the 1970s, MCDB comprise a number of related media optimized for the growth and proliferation of specific cell types. For instance, MCDB 105 (1978) was used in the low-serum growth of human lung fibroblasts. MCDB 131 (1987) was developed for the growth of human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC) with minimal fetal bovine serum. Ready-to-use commercial solutions of MCDB Medium may contain additional components or supplements.
