Anti-NEFM antibodies are used in the immunodetection of the protein neurofilament medium chain. In humans, the canonical protein has a reported length of 916 amino acid residues and a mass of 102.5 kDa. Its subcellular localization is in the cytoplasm. Up to 2 different isoforms have been reported for this protein. It is notably expressed in the placenta, colon, cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and caudate. It is a member of the Intermediate filament protein family. Post-translational modifications have been described, including phosphorylation and glycosylation. The NEFM marker can be used to identify Retinal Ganglion Cells.* Synonyms for this target antigen include NF-M, NFM, neurofilament medium polypeptide, 160 kDa neurofilament protein, neurofilament 3, and NEF3. NEFM gene orthologs have been reported in the mouse, rat, bovine, frog, zebrafish, chimpanzee and chicken species.
