Renin is a proteolytic acidic enzyme produced and secreted by the juxtaglomerular cells in the kidney. Renin cleaves angiotensinogen into angeotensin I, which ultimately leads to the production of angiotensin II, thus maintaining circulatory homeostasis through its direct effect on smooth vascular muscle and on the stimulation of aldosterone, and by its stimulatory effect on the sympathetic nervous system. The Renin RIA kit from IBL America is a radioimmunometric assay that uses a pair of highly sensitive Monoclonal Antibodies with the Iodine125 isotope for the quantitative in vitro diagnostic measurement of the level of active renin in plasma.
