Description
The Thermo Scientific NanoDrop™ 1000 UV/Vis Spectrophotometer allows micro-quantitation of only 1 ul of sample with remarkable reproducibility. The user simply pipettes a 1 ul sample directly onto a fiber optic measurement surface where it is held in place by surface tension, eliminating the need for cuvettes or capillaries. When the upper fiber optic tip engages the sample, a liquid column of controlled path length is formed. A full-spectrum absorbance measurement is automatically made through the hourglass-shaped sample column at both a 1mm and 0.2mm path length. The short path length allows researchers to measure samples up to 50-fold higher in concentration than can be measured on classical 1 cm cuvette-based systems, virtually eliminating the need for dilutions. The dual path length capability of the patented retention system also provides an extensive dynamic range (2ng/ul to 3700ng/ul for dsDNA) (0.1mg/ml to 100mg/ml for BSA). In order to prepare the instrument for another measurement, the user simply wipes the sample off with a lab wipe before loading the next sample.
The NanoDrop software includes nine different modules specifically suited for today’s research. Each is designed to display an absorbance spectrum of the sample along with relevant information. The various modules include: Nucleic Acids, Microarray, Protein A280, Proteins and Labels, Protein BCA, Protein Bradford, Protein Lowry, Cell Cultures and general UV-Vis Measurement.
The Thermo Scientific NanoDrop™ 1000 Spectrophotometer, with its simple but elegant design, is rapidly become an essential instrument in many world-class research centers. Investigators can now use this novel technology to accurately and easily quantitate undiluted samples. The unique attributes of this instrument enable scientists in various fields to perform a variety of limited-sample assays with a higher degree of confidence and explore possibilities previously prohibited using cuvette–based spectrophotometry.
