Bioremediation Products and Services
  • Catalog Number: CRO-10018
  • Description: Products and Services Bioremediation is a process that uses microorganisms, bacteria, fungi, green plants, and their enzymes to restore the environment to its original state after contamination. Bioremediation has been used for centuries after corruption of soil by salt, sewage, and other contaminants, particularly in agriculture. Bioremediation of soil or water following contamination by crude oil is performed by a variety of bacteria that feed on hydrocarbons, breaking down the petroleum molecules into less harmful substances. These naturally occurring bacteria can potentially be isolated and expanded to help remediate oil spills, an approach well accepted by nature with minimal threat to marine ecosystems.

Altogen Labs successfully isolated oil-degrading microbes from polluted soil near Galveston, Texas. These microbes were shown in laboratory tests to be highly effective in bioremediation of petroleum-saturated earth. A method was developed to cultivate oil-degrading bacteria specific to the site of a particular spill, microbes that act on the hydrocarbon molecules present at the polluted site. The bacteria are grown in large volumes in an aqueous solution, from which the water is eventually evaporated to yield a high concentration of bacteria in dry form and low volume.

The product is very stable and the dry bacteria can be activated by simply re-introducing a water-based solution. The growth conditions for these natural bacterial strains were optimized for effective oil degradation in Texas soil. Optimization included considering variables in temperature, soil conditions, and oil composition such that these microbes could be used to remediate contaminated soil on-site when reintroduced in large numbers. This technology offers great potential for cleaning up contaminated soil due to rupture of underground storage tanks, pesticides, percolation of contaminated surface water, oil and fuel dumping, leaching of wastes from landfills, and direct discharge of industrial wastes to the soil.

Bioremediation: Oil-degrading Bacteria Products and Services
  • Catalog Number: CRO-10019
  • Description: Bioremediation: Oil-degrading Bacteria Products and Services Most bioremediation products are nutrient-based additives or non-specific microbial cultures which lack efficiency in field tests and applications. Altogen Labs is currently working to develop a superior microbiology systems to improve microbial culture effectiveness. Oil-degrading bacteria, which occur naturally in the environment, are of particular interest to bioremediation companies and scientists because of the positive impact of these bacteria on remediating oil spills in the planet’s oceans and soil. Contamination of the earth’s oceans by oil can be both man-made and naturally occurring. Each year, some 250 million liters of petroleum enter the marine environment from natural seepage. These leaks from the ocean floor contain aromatic compounds that are toxic to most life forms and can cause major ecological insults.

However, despite its toxicity to most organisms, a considerable percentage of petroleum entering marine systems is eliminated by the hydrocarbon-degrading activities of various microbial communities, in particular, by a recently discovered group of microbes known as hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (HCB). Of this group, the bacterium Alcanivorax borkumensis was the first HCB to have its genome sequenced by scientists and is now the subject of study by researchers around the world.

Service: In Vivo Stable siRNA and microRNA
  • Catalog Number: CRO-10027
  • Description: In Vivo Stable siRNA and microRNA RNAi-induced gene silencing is used to study gene function in cultured cells, however this approach does not allow a critical evaluation of gene function within the whole organism. Unfortunately, application of RNAi in vivo may present many technical challenges due to siRNA stability, delivery efficiency, and tissue targeting. Performing RNAi experiments in animals can be laborious, time-consuming, expensive, and present numerous technical challenges. Altogen Labs offer complete A-to-Z RNAi services, including in vivo siRNA development, chemical modification of siRNA (increase stability in serum), siRNA encapsulation into liposome, siRNA tissue targeting, qRT-PCR assay to measure siRNA accumulation, biodistribution, functional target mRNA knockdown, reduction of protein expression, off-target effects, immune system response, and many other RNAi in vivo services.

Altogen Labs provides complete in vivo siRNA development services, encapsulation, and tissue targeted delivery. Multiple siRNA administration routes, local and systemic: Intravenous, Intraperitoneal, Intranasal, Intratumoral, Intratracheal, Intradermal, Intramuscular, Intrathecal, Intracerebellar, Intravascular perfusion.

Service: Liposome Encapsulation of mRNA, Protein, and DNA
  • Catalog Number: CRO-10015
  • Description: Liposome Encapsulation of mRNA, Protein, and DNA Liposomes can be used to protect cargo molecules (e.g., DNA, RNA, or protein) in vivo and enhance intracellular delivery. Liposomes can be used for the highly efficient delivery of cargo molecules (protein, DNA, RNA) into cells both in vitro and in vivo.

Altogen Labs offers encapsulation of any negatively charged molecuIes (e.g., mRNA, siRNA, shRNA, microRNA, plasmid DNA, and protein) into either one of several standard liposome formulations (PC:Cholesterol and DSPC:Cationic Lipid:PEGylated Lipoid:Cholesterol) or a custom liposome formulation. Sonication and liposome extrusion methods allow the generation of liposomes of a defined size (from 100 to 400 nm). The customer should provide at least 0.5 mg siRNA for liposome encapsulation. Liposome-encapsulated siRNAs are delivered to the customer.

Altogen Labs offers encapsulation services for many different molecules into either one of several standard liposome formulations (PC:Cholesterol and DSPC:Cationic Lipid: PEGylated Lipoid:Cholesterol) or a custom liposome formulation. Microfluidization (microfluidics), extrusion and sonication methods are available to generate liposomes of a defined size. The client is required to provide at least 0.25 mg of material for liposome encapsulation. Custom liposome formulations are available to provide in vivo protection, reduce the innate immune response, and reduce cytotoxicity.
