The Formalin Test for nociception involves injecting a noxious substance (typically a, 3% Formalin solution) into the plantar surface of rodent's hindpaw. The rodent reacts to the Formalin injection by licking and flinching the injected hindpaw. The PAINless instrument automates the task by determining the number of times the animal flinches over a user defined period of time (traditionally one hour). The PAINless software format displays each subject's responses on the computer screen immediately following each trial. The recording of the results appear in a waveform representing the movement (above a user-defined threshold), on the piezo-electric sensor, when the animal reacts to the injected Formalin. The PAINless software captures a complete waveform and provides a method for the researcher to examine the accuracy of the summary point calculations. All raw data from the experiment is captured and combined into one ASCII file for further analysis. The easy-to-clean PAINless test cabinets are uniquely designed to permit accurate results in testing by limiting inter-subject ultrasonic vocalizations and pheromones. Each sturdy cabinet permits full and unobtrusive observation of test animals, and includes a ventilation fan, light, and viewing lens. Furthermore, the dynamic-response sensor design ignores static animal weights, enabling the full range of the transducer capacity to be available for response recording.
