Polymorphonuclear neutrophils form a primary line of defense against bacterial infections using complementary oxidative and non-oxidative pathways to destroy phagocytized pathogens. These cells contain a battery of hydrolytic enzymes that normally are utilized for the degradation of foreign materials ingested as part of the phagocytic process.
