Like most laboratories, we predominantly assay in 96-well format so a multichannel pipette is indispensable. One advantage of this electronic type is that it can be programmed for quite a few functions such as repeat, dilute, mix, sequential dispense/aspirate, or a custom program. It feels strange to say this about a pipette but there's a bit of a learning curve to unlock the full capabilities.

Protocol Overview

The tips have to attach FIRMLY for accuracy and precision. When using generic tips instead of Finntips, I sometimes notice unequal channel volumes. Hand tightening the tips solves the issue.

Results Summary

We mostly do basic forward and step pipetting. The step function is useful with the 300 uL unit for repeatedly dispensing small volumes. Frankly, the other programs are overkill because it's easier to do it manually than go through the menu. On the other hand, if you're running a lot of plates where mixing, diluting, sequential (different volumes in series) dispensing/aspiration come into play, this can handle it.

The Bottom Line

This is a nice device. The reliability and battery life have been good and it's not too heavy. The electronic trigger button is so much more ergonomic than a manual thumb plunger that it's worth getting even if you only use the basic function.
