Our lab does a lot of yeast genetic experiments including genetic selection with 5-FOA (this product). We added 5-FOA in the growth media and select yeast strains that lack the URA3 gene, which converts 5-FOA to a toxic compound. The selection by 5-FOA is very useful and applicable to a lot of yeast genetic selections for the ideal strains. We use this 5-FOA reagent for yeast experiments, and for over 5 years it has been working very well. The other thing I like about ordering this product is that we can get a very nice salsa from US Biological made in Texas. Great!
Yeast selection for loss of URA3 gene

We use 5-FOA to make plates for yeast selection. The final concentration that we add into drop-out media is 1g/L.
Add 5-FOA after autoclaving the media, and wait until temperature of the media drops to around 50 degrees.
