Our lab studies natural variation in stress response (to all different perturbations) in C. elegans. To carry out this research, we maintain hundreds of wild isolate C. elegans strains on agar-based plates. Any given experiment requires 500-1000 of these plates. We choose US Biological's agar to make the media for these plates because it is a great price and the company was great to work with. They sent us a free sample so we could test the agar in our recipe before we purchased the material in bulk.

Wild isolate C. elegans strains
We use the agar in preparing all the solid media plates in the lab. We have a simple recipe that involves agar, agarose, NaCl and peptone (which we also purchase from US Biological). The materials are autoclaved and then we added extra salts and cholesterol once the media is cooled. The combined solutions are then poured into 6 cm or 10 cm culture plates. These plates are used to maintain our C. elegans strains.

We have been using the agar since we started our lab two years ago. It has always worked well for our plate-pouring purposes.
