MIF levels have been shown to be high in patients with acute dengue. Therefore, we set out to validate if this can be used as a biomarker to validate presence of severe dengue infection. We determined MIF levels in serum from a large cohort of patients with varying severity and calculated ROC curves to determine if this can be used as a biomarker for severe dengue.
MIF quantitative ELISA
Human serum
Human serum was used in this assay and the manufacturers' instructions were followed in carrying out the assay. PRISM was used to determine the unknown values from the standard curve.
Very easy to carry out and the results can be obtained in 3 hours.
Although the MIF levels were higher in patients with severe dengue when compared to non severe dengue, this was not statistically significant. However, MIF levels were significantly higher in those with secondary dengue when compared to those with primary dengue.
