We research complex lung disorders.

High levels of inhaled oxygen, or hyperoxia, is commonly used as a life-sustaining measure in critically ill patients, especially neonates. However, prolonged exposures can exacerbate respiratory failure. Several studies showed that TLRs confers protection against hyperoxia-induced lung injury and mortality. TICAM-1 negatively regulates TLR signalling, so we wanted to check whether hyperoxia somehow affects TICAM-1 expression and disrupts TLR signaling. To our knowledge, our studies are the first to define role of PICAM-1-TLR cytoprotective axis in the lung and epithelial cells. This pathway is a potential therapeutic target against a range of oxidant-induced lung injuries.
