Flow cytometry is a laser based technology used to count and sort cells, detect biomarkers and engineer proteins, by suspending cells in a stream of fluid and passing them by an electronic detection system. Flow cytometry is used in research and clinical laboratories for many applications including chromosome analysis, cancer diagnosis, protein expression, DNA and RNA quantification, multidrug resistance, and measuring enzyme activity. A system includes software, which should be user-friendly for flow cytometry novices, and advanced for experienced users to preform sophisticated experimental setups and analyses. Consider whether your laboratory needs a system that permits customization and provides imaging capability, and the degree of resolution your lab requires. Look for features such as automatic start-up, shutdown or cleaning, partially or fully automated processing, and quality customer support and service provided by the manufacturer.
