Small amount of sample, large number of targets: this is where bead-based profiling assays come in. With these assays, you can accurately determine the level of dozens of targets in, for example, 50 ul of serum. These assays can generally handle a variety of sample types and offer a broad range of detection. Some utilize dedicated instrumentation while others have been developed for use with flow cytometers or other instruments that you may already have in the lab. Assays exist for a wide array of targets, with those involved in signaling pathways (e.g. cytokines and chemokines) being favorites. Many vendors offer premixed panels for assaying such common targets; however, custom assays are also widely available.
