It wasn’t all that long ago that the ability to peer inside an animal and visualize a molecular marker seemed like only a dream. Today, there are several in vivo imaging systems that can help you do just that – and more. Some systems offer x-ray capability while others go a step further and allow you to overlay your small animal x-ray with the image you generate from your fluorescent imaging scan for better orientation within the animal. Many systems offer high sensitivity, but you’ll want to ask under what conditions they reach optimal sensitivity (e.g. in what types of tissue, with what types of agents or dyes) to make sure that you choose the system that will offer the greatest sensitivity in your experimental design.
