Recombinases

Recombinases are enzymes that catalyze recombination events within DNA that are site-specific. Site-specific recombination occurs at a specific sequence and involves cleavage and reunion, which integrates, inverts, or deletes a DNA fragment without the gain or loss of nucleotides. Recombinases also function in recombinational DNA repair. The recombinase superfamily has two main groups, tyrosine and serine recombinases. These can be further subdivided based on their size or mode of recombinase action. Common tyrosine recombinase systems include Cre-lox, FLP-FRT, and R-RS where Cre, FLP, and R are bidirectional recombinases, and lox, FRT, and RS are the respective identical DNA recognition sites.
